There were a lot of these bugs around this weekend on Frostweed (Verbesina virginica).

Wow.
These are coreid (leaf-footed) bugs in the genus Hypselonotus, family Coreidae.

Thanks for the pointers. I found the bugs on Bug Guide, in an almost identical situation, i.e. in the same area (well, Austin) and on the same plant (Frostweed).
