When I challenged its progress it fanned its wings so fast that the camera didn't capture them! It was big.

They are very conspicuous and
They are very conspicuous and common, so it's not unusual to see lots of them from May to July. The queens themselves are typically no threat to homes, although mature colonies will sometimes move in if they find food.
