I’m not sure what to make of this one. Male Baeoalitriozus diospyri? I found a female at this location last year.
TIA

thanks but
are those really cornicles? The insect has a series of projections on the abdominal segments better seen in the new photo I just posted.
Thanks again

Thanks for the extra shot.
I agree, that's one interesting looking abdomen. I'm still confident that it's an aphid, though. Do you know what plant it was on?

you're right
of course :-). I Googled "hickory aphid" and the top image was this BugGuide photo

Tinocallis. That one was ID'd by Natalie Hernandez

hickory
same hickory as in the thumbnail below and with similar galls this year

If I find more, I'll try to get better photos. This time I was holding the leaf with one hand and the camera with the other. Definitely not optimal...

Hickory, huh?
Well, maybe something in this neighborhood:

EDIT: You beat me by two minutes. :)

Good job guys.
Yes it is Tinocallis / Melanocallis

I'm not positive, but it looks like the illustrations of Tinocallis (Melanocallis) caryfoliae from the Canadian Entomologist, which has flip flopped between Tinocallis and its own genus.

Apparently you need to see the ventral side of the head to differentiate the two. Helpful.

I'm going to move these to Panaphidina for now, and investigate further.
