Moved
Moved from Robber Flies.

Laphria sackeni; probably a male.
Thorax with pleural sclerites all black-haired, = L. sackeni. Fly looks very teneral (soft & pale, recently emerged from puparium).

Cheers, Eric.

Thanks, Eric!
Thought of sackeni after going over Stephen Bullock's on-line key, but only in the 'back of my mind' because I was busy processing some bee specimens from transmontane San Gabriel Mountains.

Moved
Moved from ID Request.

Thinking Laphria sp.
but not certain. Have asked Ed Fisher to comment. He will certainly know this.
Thanks for the contribution.

My apologies,
meant Eric Fisher! Don't know where my mind was.
The present fly looks like a male to me.

thanks
Thank you Harmut

Is this a common sort of species? I hadn't seen it before. My nephew (age 11) spotted it.

Oh also -- is it a female? It looked like possibly an ovipositor? it was quite torpid so I think maybe fairly freshly emerged.
