White Sulphur Butterfly ? - Colias eurytheme - Female
Manteca, San Joaquin County, California, USA
October 18, 2007
Size: 1 1/2 "
I was struck by the pink rim around this Butterfly's wings . It is such a colorful and lovely Butterfly ... could it be the common European Cabbage Butterfly or the Sulphur white ? I hope that it is a California native , but don't know much about Butterflys yet except that they are gorgeous . I could not get a photo of it's wings open , but I did see a thick rim of black when it flapped .Thanks for any help in furthering my knowledge in my new found hobby of insect photography , sincerely Beth

Orange Sulpher-white phase female--Colias eurytheme
You have a female Orange Sulpher...fairly common in the Manteca area..especialy arround alfalfa fields in summer. about 50% of the females are white...the others are almost identical to the yellow/orange males. Great photo.
