Is this a brown recluse? St. Louis, Missouri, USA May 31, 2018 Size: Penny for scale
I just moved into a new apartment in St. Louis yesterday. I had to store a couch in a dusty, unused garage near the apartment for two weeks prior to move-in, and I just moved it into the apartment today. A spider scuttled out of the couch and I squashed it, so I couldn't get a good ID on it. Later this evening, I found the dead spider pictured here in the kitchen. It looks very similar to the fleeting view of the spider I saw earlier today.
I've already done a bit of research and can outline here what I have noted about the spider's appearance, as I can't seem to take a really good picture of the specimen. The spider is uniformly brown with a fiddle pattern on the cephalothorax. There do not appear to be stripes or patterns on the abdomen, though the abdomen is caved in and difficult to examine. There are fine hairs and no stripes, patterns, or large spines on the legs. Unfortunately, I am having a lot of trouble seeing the eyes and cannot comment on them.
I am fairly sure this is a brown recluse and not a lookalike (e.g. cellar spider, male southern house spider, etc.). Regardless, I am not an expert at identifying spiders and would like to have this confirmed. If these are brown recluse spiders, are they most likely coming from inside the couch, or has this apartment had a longer standing infestation? What should I do?
