Tenthredinidae, quite a few, on Interrupted Ferns - Strongylogaster polita

Tenthredinidae, quite a few, on Interrupted Ferns - Strongylogaster polita
100 Acre Wood, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA
June 1, 2018
Quite a few feeding on Interrupted Ferns, Osmunda claytoniana.
Dave Smith suggests these might be Strongylogaster tacita (Norton) and to look for the distinctive adults around the ferns. He also said: "Strongylogaster larvae like to bore into some soft substance to pupate. I would put dead wood, cork, corrugated cardboard, hollow twigs, or even straws in with them. Anything they could easily bore into for a pupal cell. Problem is keeping them all summer/winter and hope something comes out next year."

May 4, 2019: oh my goodness, 2 adults (These would be the very first sawflies I've ever overwintered!)

Moved from Strongylogaster.

I finally sent your specimen to Dave this week and he got to it right away. I reared the same species from the same host, larva collected in PA. This is a new westernmost record, and first reliable host record.

What fun.
Thank you Charley and Dave.
Should BG range include IA?

I just put in the range that has been published so far...
but I guess I can add that in.

.
Thanks!
