Male Panurginus sp. - Panurginus - male

Male Panurginus sp. - Panurginus - Male
Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon, USA
May 13, 2018
Size: 6 mm
Third year in a row trying to get decent photos of this species! After numerous attempts at netting one, I finally caught a male on our Ceanothus. I didn't realize until after taking the photos that I had left a protective UV-filter on the lens, so the close-up photos don't show the bees' dark blue color. I've included a couple more photos taken on 5/19/18 with a different lens, to demonstrate how they reflect deep blue in direct sunlight.
  • Size: 6 mm (male) [~7.5–9 mm (female) previously]
  • Floral host plants: California lilac (Ceanothus), forget-me-nots (Myosotis), and cultivated strawberries (Fragaria × ananassa); they also seem to prefer perching (grooming/basking) on the leaves of the Ceanothus, lilies (Lilium orientalis), and dogwood (Cornus)
  • Extremely cold-tolerant; I ended up having to keep this one in the fridge overnight just to chill him down enough to get a few decent shots
  • First observed in the garden this year: May 4
I'll also try and get some more photos this weekend, but they are very fast! Previous years:
