I'm still trying to figure these out. I've only seen one in the wild and it was under a rock at Utah Lake (I've been flipping rocks at Utah Lake for years). Was yours on the move when you found it? Was it morning or evening? Were there others? I hope you won't mind answering of few of my questions.

On the move
This beetle was found on the move. I was not flipping rocks, logs, or anything else. It was pure luck in finding it. It was crawling across marshy vegetation. It was spotted in the open between clumps of native grasses. I found it late morning say 10 am to 1 p.m. It was solitary as best I recall. I hope this helps you. Is the ID correct?

Your ID looks solid to me.
Your ID looks solid to me.
This species seems to like sun exposed places near standing water or significant moisture. Many of these searchers are apparently active in the morning or the evening. You've confirmed my suspicion that this species is active early in the day, thank you.

I prefer BugGuide's treatment of genus "Callisthenes" be ...
replaced by the wide sense of genus
Calosoma
according to the classification given in the catalogue of North American Geadephaga by Bousquet (2012). If so, the particular species posted here would be called
Calosoma (Chrysostigma) cancellatum
Eschscholtz. The reasons for my recommendation relate to both a desire for consistency and an acknowledgement of the most recently published authoritative opinion. Except for the tiger beetles, most or all of BugGuide's Carabidae section already follows the 2012 Bousquet classification. It is more recent than that of Erwin (2007). These are Bousquet's words: "The genus
Calosoma
is retained here in its wide sense following several authors, including Culot (1988). Others used different arrangements. For example, Lorenz (2005) and Erwin (2007a) listed
Callisthenes
Fischer von Waldheim as a valid genus with
Chrysostigma
Kirby and
Callistenia
Lapouge as subgenera."
I suppose any contributing editor has the right to adjust parts of BugGuide's classification at any time. However, it would be nice to get a consensus first. I am personally unfamiliar with the manual steps in rearranging/renaming BugGuide's supraspecific names. Thoughts?
This recommendation has also been posted at
Forums/Taxonomy Proposals
for opinions.
Otherwise, a very nice set of images.
