There is an orange/yellow spot on the propleuron and the body is quite orange; orange/yellow scutellum. I think this is Spilomyia texana... male. I have sent it to Dr. Martin Hauser...

Systema dipterorum lists S. texana as a synonym of Spilomyia alcimus. Why does BugGuide hold differently? (What is the story here?)

Unfortunately Systema diptero
Unfortunately Systema dipterorum is not completely updated and sometimes reflects different views of what is a species and even what is the correct name of a species from the views of other Dipterists. I have no problem distinguishing the two species, texana has a spot on the propleuron and has a distinct more orange color than the other species. It has also a more southern distribution (not sure if the two species overlap). That is the reason why we separate the two species. If they should turn out to be one, it is easy to combine them both, but for now we keep them separated. Cheers Martin
