Communing False Bombardiers in a Tree Crevice - Galerita bicolor

Communing False Bombardiers in a Tree Crevice - Galerita bicolor
Near Ruraldale, Upshur County, West Virginia, USA
April 15, 2005
On an unusually warm April day these Galerita beetles seemed to be getting some sun and fresh air, while remaining near their sanctuary. When I gentled prodded them with a twig, they retreated inward rather than outward. All told I could see at least a dozen beetles in this commune, though by splitting open the huge maple tree who knows how many would have been found. The latter course seemed a little drastic and I refrained.

Moved tentatively; good call, Patrick

G bicolor, perhaps
I recently came to understand the key in Ciegler, Ground Beetles of South Carolina (1), for this genus. If you have another shot showing the outline of the head and pronotum clearly, it should be easy to key these--they look like G. bicolor, from what I can see of the head, but I'm not completely sure.
