I think this is a carpenter bee but I'm not sure.

Other things to look for with Xylocopa besides size are also a shiny abdomen (vs haired in a bumblebee) and large eyes.

Possible Western Carpenter Bee - Xylocopa californica
Looks a lot like Western Carpenter Bee - Xylocopa californica. Size and wing color are some identifiers.
