I found this in a meadow where there were tons of Chinese mantis oothecas, but they all look like ping pong balls. This one is more oval, so I assume it is either the European one or the Carolina (native). Also I assume the ootheca is the best way to tell, but I could also look at the young mantises that just hatched if there are identifying characteristics on them.
