Some kind of Haliplus species, anyone know for sure? I don't know if I can get better pictures without a better light set-up

possibly H. triopsis
according to Downie and Arnett there's at least 5 of these Haliplus with the black dot on the pronotum behind the head. H. triopsis Say and H. pantherinus Aube' both are listed from KS and fit your photos well. They key only in that H. pantherinus has longer claws. Yours look fairly long, but the descriptions seem to match better to H. triopsis. If you have access to a reference collection, perhaps that could get you a more definitive answer.

Could you tell me how long each are?
I can reshoot the tarsal claws and do a ratio measurement to figure out their size and maybe nail down this ID! Thanks for your help!

good thinking,
but unfortunately I can't say how long is "long".
sorry,
Tim

What's the full citation? If the key is in a journal I can request it through my university. You might spread that around the grapeline that I can get people keys, but I don't think I can announce it publicly.
