vs. gray hairstreak
John, I was not aware that the gray hairstreak was found in extreme South Florida (the scrub mallow hairstreak is much more common) but no, I cannot rule out that species. If you would like to bump it up to genus level, I see why. Thanks!

I sent it to...
Dr. Marc C. Minno, co-author of "Butterflies through Binoculars--Florida," for his input. He replied that it probably is Mallow, but it could also be Gray so the only way to know is to rear it to adult.
The range map there has Gray all the way down into the Keys. Also, Marc's "Florida Butterfly Caterpillars and their Host Plants" shows that the cats are very similar.
