Unknown Caterpillar? - Spodoptera latifascia

Unknown Caterpillar? - Spodoptera latifascia
LADY LAKE, Lake County, Florida, USA
June 14, 2018
Size: just under 2"
I found this guy at the base of my scarlet hibiscus as I was about to transplant it. I took some photos and came inside to see what it might be. When I went back he seemed to have vanished but once I finished transplanting he emerged from the soil/mulch as I watered the plant. I'd call him a worm but he appears to have legs like a caterpillar. Many thanks in advance!
