Maculated Scarab - Gnorimella maculosa

Maculated Scarab - Gnorimella maculosa
Penny's Bend Nature Reserve, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
April 20, 2005
Size: circa 14 mm
Flew onto a tree-trunk of a Boxelder, Acer negundo, where a line of ants was active. Remained for a minute or so, then flew off. I thought it was a Trichiotinus or Euphoria at first. I was quite thrilled to see this species--I've seen most of the large, diurnal scarabs in my area. (Update January 2010. Still my only sighting of this species!)

See guide page for identification references.
Image updated 4/16/2020. I increased brightness and saturation quite a bit, as the original was very low contrast and saturation--I am not sure why.

another NC record
I just (May 5, 2006) picked up another one of these in a Lindgren Funnel Trap @ Lowgap, NC - of course adds little in the way of biological data.

A first?
I have never seen a photo of this species in the wild - very good.
