teneral silvanid - Uleiota debilis

teneral silvanid - Uleiota debilis
Nashua, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
September 25, 2007
Size: about 4.5 mm
I collected a couple-dozen of these rather common silvanids under the semi-loose bark of a decidous log. About half of them were the typical dark charcoal brown but the rest were a lighter, testaceous color like this one. After my initial excitement at finding a new (for me) species I concluded they were teneral instead and would darken up in time. I kept them alive just to be certain and sure enough, they did darken. I think I preserved a few of them but turned the majority loose on the in a natural area on the property where I hope to see their offspring in the future.
