Red Spider Large with Monarch - Araneus

Red Spider Large with Monarch - Araneus
San Clemente, Orange County, California, USA
June 21, 2018
Size: large
Monarchs get stuck in these Webs every year I release a lot of them as the spider seems not to be around? This time it was not about to give up its prey/ the monarch kept fighting long and hard. I thought a quick sting and that would be all for this pore butterfly! I guess the spider Could not get in close enough to give it a sting?

gemma/illaudatus
dont think species ID is possible, but those are the only two real possibilities IMO
