I can't locate my guide to syrphid ID that i know was made available on bug guide. I would appreciate a link to that guide if any of you know its location.

Did you mean to leave the locality as 'g'?

thank you. The reference you cited is very helpful however I was thinking of a page submitted some years ago by BugGuides Martin Hauser that simplified the choices and gave images of each group. I printed it and just cant find it now.

Oh goodness, that would be a lovely resource to have at hand! I've never seen it but man would it be nice. Thanks for letting me know, I might poke Martin and see if he's willing to dig it up.

Syrphus knabi
Syrphus knabi .... female.
Superb picture.
Frons shining yellow to antennae with two black spots above the antennae. Thorax with dorsal stripes long, reaching almost to scutellum and thorax yellow at sides above the wings.
Yellow markings on tergites 3 and 4 BROADLY overlapping side margins.
Hind metatarsus orange.
