this is E. cordata
Cordate pronotum; coarsely punctate elytra. Yes they range from quite far inland to the ocean shore where they can be found under driftwood.

There are several Eleodes species that can be found on beaches,
The genus is huge, and not all of them occupy desert habitats. :) Interestingly, I've only ever found members of this particular subgenus near large water sources.
