Found on dead spruce tree. No larvae found within branch.

Looks like buprestid damage t
Looks like buprestid damage to me. The frass will show the true identity. If it is very compact, buprestidae if loose like sawdust cerambycidae.

I added another photo. The frass is quite compact, so I'm thinking buprestidae as well.
