Unknown flying insect
Madison County, Illinois, USA
June 26, 2018
Size: 1/2” including antennae
We are swarmed by these in the late spring, early summer, regardless of rainfall me they seem to be most active at night. Our pest control man said they were termites but they don’t quite match the criteria I am finding for termites. Namely antenna length, head shape, wing sizes and shapes, even the abdomen doesn’t look quite right...to me it looks like a type of lacewing or caddisfly but it’s head looks very moth-like (but without the tubular, coiled proboscis/galea. They also don’t have the mouthparts of flying termites. I assume these are adults as I’ve never seen any change in these insects past this stage but I’m unsure because of pest control. We also get Black and Tan flying ants at the same time, confirmed on the ant IDs.

Yes, look like caddisfly
to us also. Nothing a pest control guy could do about them. Just a part of nature. Celebrate it when it happens!
