Turquoise-tipped Darner - Rhionaeschna psilus - male

Turquoise-tipped Darner - Rhionaeschna psilus - Male
Williamson County, Texas, USA
October 28, 2007
An intermittent creek, now drying up, runs through our woods. This male Turquoise Darner was patrolling one of the larger remaining puddles, occasionally perching on flood debris on the sunny bank (never on the shaded side) several feet above the water. Because of the location and the insect's wariness, it was not possible to get an unobstructed image, but these (there will be three) show the salient points for ID (ID confirmed by Dr. John Abbott of the University of Texas.)

Blue face, green stripes on thorax, turquoise spot on the ventral surface of S-9/10, blue/turquoise spot on ventral S2 of males.
