striped scorpion? - Centruroides vittatus
Dixon, Pulaski County, Missouri, USA
October 25, 2007
Size: 1.5 inch approx
My neighbor found this walking across his livingroom. I researched scorpions in Missouri and there is only one--the striped scorpion, so I am pretty sure that's what this is (with it's tail curled, it is just slightly under an inch long). The question I have is that it says they're only found in southern Missouri and we are definitely Central Missouri and have never seen a scorpion here before (I have live in Missouri since 1984). Are they that reclusive, or is this one way out of it's normal habitat? I was afraid to release it because it is getting cold and didn't know if it would be able to tolerate the change in weather. What do you recommend I do with it? (My neighbor was going to flush it, but thought of me and asked if I wanted it--so I didn't intend to end up with it and don't really like scorpions, but he/she is fascinating and deserves to live, but preferrably not with me.) Any help would be appreciated.

Yes.
I would concur with your ID. I lived near Branson for a year and found the scorpions were usually restricted to glade habitats, as one might suspect (vastly drier than surrounding habitats). Seasons are mild enough that they can easily withstand the cold (though they no doubt burrow into the soil or rotting logs).
