Not the friendliest ants - Formica - female

Not the friendliest ants - Formica - Female
Sierra County, New Mexico, USA
July 4, 2018
Size: 4-5mm
Formica sp. ? These ants are common on the forest floor in riparian areas. I stumbled into a nest encompassing ~100 square meters on the bank of the river, and the ants were highly aggressive, covering not only the ground but the vegetation as well. I'd love to know which species they are.

Definitely Formica
I don't know them too well so I can't really help much on that, but I've seen aggressive bitey Formica perpilosa nests in riparian areas of West Texas. There are probably a few similar species out there in the same habitat, but hopefully this puts you on the right track
