fungus Clown Beetle - Hister abbreviatus

fungus Clown Beetle - Hister abbreviatus
Nashua, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
September 29, 2007
Size: about 6.5 mm
This was the smaller of two histerid species I found in the same patch of wilted, rotting mushrooms growing all around the base of a tree in a mixed woods area.

I agree,
it does look like abbreviatus. Moved to guide.

H. abbreviatus
This one sure looks like Hister abbreviatus Fabricius. 4 complete elytra stria, 5th only short apically, and suture stria incomplete basal and apical, subhumeral(s) stria present (lateraly), front tibiae serrate vice dentate. The MCZ site seems to be down again this weekend (which should at least have the similar H. foedatus LeConte), but compare to the image on Jeff's website, and I note, to your own! To exclude any question about H. foedatus, a shot of the elytra lateral edge area would show one subhumeral stria or two (H. abbreviatus).

Adding closeup
Is this what we want to see?

that's close!
but yes, that looks to be the outer subhumeral stria (basal), together with the one we could previously see toward the apex, making this H. abbreviatus :)
