Floating Mass of larvae

Floating Mass of larvae
Junctioin, Kimble County, Texas, USA
July 9, 2018
Size: almost microscopic
I saw this floating mass of something that looked like eggs or larvae in a puddle after a heavy rain. The total area is approx. 4" X 3". The individuals are wiggling and sometimes break away from the mass. Larger red "mites" are riding on top and seem to be managing the smaller purple ones in some way. There are also several smaller masses nearby.

My guess is these are aquatic springtails (Podura aquatica), though I noticed in the guide there are some other springtail species it could be.
These are adults - springtails do not have larvae (only smaller, similar-looking juveniles).
Really interesting!

Podura aquatica
Thank you for your reply. They live on detritus found in the water, so these creatures may disappear when the puddles dry up. Is that correct.
I was mystified by them. It is amazing what lives around us all the time and suddenly appears.
