unknown insect - Hemaris diffinis
Spring Lake, Monmouth County, New Jersey, USA
August 3, 2007
Size: about 3cm
This insect was flying like a hummingbird; able to fly forward, backward and fly in place. I never saw it land on any of the flowers.

Hemaris Diffinis
I'd say this is a Snowberry Clearwing Moth - Hemaris diffinis. Compare yours to this one:

Genus Hemaris
This would be one of the moths in genus Hemaris. I can't tell for sure which one, maybe someone else can tell you for sure.
