Size: ~5mm.
Another unknown fly from our potato plants. (live oak/chaparral habitat). Now that I look through my previous postings, it is probably the same as .

Hunter fly
I edge toward hunter flies (see my comments with Ron's on your other picture). This looks an awful lot like the ones I see around my yard. However, I'm not a fly expert, so take that with a grain of salt. Actually, maybe a pound or so of salt.

Interesting stuff, Kevin.
I'd not heard of these flies, but saw what was called an Old World Hunter Fly at a U.S. government website. They were first spotted in the U.S. (New York) in 1999 and look very much like a tiger fly. Oddly, no scientific name was given.

I think we have a ton of these at the site.
Most are unidentified. I still think most are tiger flies, but am growing less certain.

Me, too.
This particular specimen, wonderfully photographed, reminds me more of a dung fly, actually (Scathophagidae or Scatophagidae).

How about Coenosia?
as suggested by Kevin Hall for this guy , it does look a lot like this guy Coenosia humilis; as well as . This paper on page 178, seems to indicate that it is found if California.

But I think that a lot and have been wrong several times.
