Congratulations, this is a very rarely seen species! Any noteworthy details about this find?

 
Not really. I had stopped to
Not really. I had stopped to check a bird I saw and then was photographing what was a pair of cooperative Black-tailed Gnatcatchers. Then I noticed that there were some interesting insects that were probably knew for me and got out the macro and concentrated on them. I just assumed that this might well be different from eastern wasps I had. I was more certain that some of the other things here were.

Ancistrocerus
Unfortunately, then it is not lutonidus, an eastern species. There is more than one Ancistrocerus species with this pattern in California, not sure which one. Mt. Diablo sounded like an odd locality name for Illinois.
