Atlantic Coast Bumblebee - Xylocopa virginica - male

Atlantic Coast Bumblebee - Xylocopa virginica - Male
Pennsylvania, USA
I tried to using http://pick4.pick.uga.edu/mp/20q?guide=Bumblebees to research the type of bumblebee (no offense bugguide!) and i found three entries: Asilidae sp UGA 3 (bee mimic), Bombus Affinis, Bombus Ashtoni (but my bee's head is bigger), and Xylocopa Virginica which is what I think my bee is.

I think this is the same bee as my other image again note the black spot on the thorax, there were a lot of these - they are BIG !

Anyone know exact species or sex ?

Tetralonia atriventris?
What is the plant it is investigating?

confused
It looks to us that this image and the next may be two pictures of the same animal, yet we are putting them in the guide in two different places. Can we double check them? They have the same spots and same legs and even appear to have the same wing venation. What if we assume they are of the same animal, what one species would they both be then?

Well,
we'll have to wait for Eric. Honestly these two species usually confuse the heck out of me!

how do you tell that it is ma
how do you tell that it is male ? :-)

Male carpenter bee.
Nice portrait of a male Xylocopa virginica, as evidenced by the bare, yellow face and bulbous eyes. Yes, they ARE big:-)
