Spine-Tailed Earwig - Forficula auricularia - male

Spine-Tailed Earwig - Forficula auricularia - Male
Cincinnati, Ohio, USA
July 12, 2018
Size: 2.5 cm
I was cleaning the sink area when this earwig crawled out of the stack of paper towels

Can you tell us how you arrived at the species?
This looks more like Forficula auricularia to me:

Thanks--and welcome to BugGuide!

So this is an European Earwig
I thought it looked similar but didn't think I would have a rare sighting in Ohio. *Widely though spottily distributed across NA* .. I only saw spottily. I accept the assessment of an experienced bug identifier!! Thank you

Spine-tailed (Doru aculeatum) will have yellow elytra and differently shaped forceps, compare . They are also generally restricted to wetland habitats, whereas Forficula is common around yards and gardens. The only Ohio records for Doru I can find are from Liberty Park in Twinsburg, so they are in the state, and I bet they are found in more places than just one park...
