100 Acre Wood, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA
July 13, 2018

July 14, 2017: finally got around to looking at it more closely and it is not something I've seen before
Guessing: Xestia c-nigrum/dolosa complex

September 2, 2018: missed the emergence of the moth, wings didn't inflate, found dead
This sometimes happens with (my) rearings: the moth, looking fully formed, dies in the unopened pupal case, or it dies while eclosing, pupal case opened but moth stuck, or the moth emerges and the wings don't inflate.
