mandible
The mandible structure looks fused. Do they use those structures for digging?

 
feeding
I have encountered H. aequalis on at least 2 occasions at sap flows on living trees with Syrphidae larvae in its mandibles. They are found mostly under bark of fallen trees where they also feed on larvae (probably mostly flies).
