Amphipyra tragopoginis
Fabius, Onondaga County, New York, USA

Size: 3 cm
I thought this cat was a Roland's Sallow, but the moth doesn't look right, so I don't know.

When I found it, it was walking across a paved road. I had no idea what it was, so I just put it in a jar with various tree leaves. It was happy to eat the leaves of a flowering bush that I don't know the name of. It pupated in a few days.
D.L. Wagner says that Roland's Sallow is supposed to eat oak, which is not what I fed it, and that it is supposed to overwinter as a pupa, but this guy emerged in a month. And it didn't look right, so I was stumped.
Two days after I found this one, I found another one on a different road about 10 miles away, but unfortunately, that one died without pupating (ate for awhile, but then shriveled up).

While the adult seems a bit odd, the caterpillar seems a good match for Orthosia hibisci.
