Hayden Prairie State Preserve, Howard County, Iowa, USA
July 15, 2018
Size: 25 mm total length
This little brown cicada is a new find for me. It was hiding in the grass on Hayden Prairie State Preserve. Maybe Cicadetta calliope?

Amazing find!
This is Okanagana balli, a really cool member of a largely western group of cicadas. It's the only member of its genus that is endemic to tallgrass prairie.

Location on this one helps. There are 56 recognized species, and only 1 or 2 occur in your area. I believe that reserve is also a common collecting locality for this species.

Okanagana balli
Thanks for the update on this neat little brown cicada, Will. I have been back to Hayden Prairie State Preserve a couple times in July and was not able to find another one now 2019, but I am sure they are very uncommon residents there.
