Anomala nimbosa? - Anomala nimbosa
Madera Canyon, Santa Cruz County, Arizona, USA
July 14, 2018
Size: 12.5 mm
Whitehouse Picnic Area
Attracted to mercury vapor and ultraviolet lights
Coordinates: 31.733566, -110.882223

It had rained for several days before and the night was moonless, dark, cloudy, and humid. Initially, a pretty decent amount of insects were showing up at my sheet. I usually keep both my mercury vapor and ultraviolet lights on, but on that night, at 9:00 PM, I decided to try Steve Lingafelter's advice to turn off the MV light for 15 minutes while leaving the UV light on. It wasn't even 5 minutes after that and my sheet was completely covered with insects. Although I had brought an excess of plastic vials to avoid mixing too many bugs in the same container, I quickly ran out of vials and had to leave behind many large moths. It was the best night ever blacklighting for bugs. Now I plan to consistently run the MV light in cycles to improve my catch.

Thank you Art!
I am looking forward to enjoying your upcoming "Beetles of Arizona" book.

Thanks Salvador! Margarethe B
Thanks Salvador! Margarethe Brummermann and I got to spend a little time in the field in July and August, which helped provide some momentum for Arizona Beetles. I'm also working on Beetles of Western North America, too. Publication of these books is still a few years out.
