Butterfly species? - Chlosyne hoffmanni
Ice House Road, El Dorado County, California, USA

Size: 2/3 inch
While driving east on Ice House Road toward Wright's Lake I saw an area with a good variety of wildflowers so I stopped my RAV4 and decided to see what type of butterflies might be found. The images that I post here are what I feel are Hoffman's Checkerspot but I could be wrong. It was one of the smaller butterflies visiting the flowers at this location.

Checkerspot
It's a checkerspot, genus Chlosyne, but you have a bewildering variety of similar species in your area. A local expert's input will be needed for species identification.
