Wright's Lake, El Dorado County, California, USA
July 17, 2018
Size: 3/4-1 inch
While visiting Wright's Lake, I was meandering on the south side looking for possibilities to photograph when I had this butterfly fly in and pose with open wings. Researching Jeffrey Glassberg's Butterflies through Binoculars of the West I came to the conclusion that this butterfly is a Hoffman's Checkerspot, a lifer for me.

Possibly Hoffman's Checkerspot. But Checks and Crescents can be difficult. Hopefully someone more versed in these will help.

Hoffmann's Checkerspot
I don't know the California species, either but Rick's suggestion looks good. Most similar species don't seem to be in El Dorado Co.
