Is this something I would do after someone tells me? I would have no idea if a species was an adult or not.

Yes
If you are not sure of the age, then you should leave it blank. However, with most of the Moths, Butterflies and Sawflies, it is very obvious. The immature are always larvae (like a worm) and almost all of the adults have wings.

Generally, most of the insects with fully developed wings are adults.
