Bumble Flower Beetle playing dead - Euphoria inda

Bumble Flower Beetle playing dead - Euphoria inda
Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area, Orange County, North Carolina, USA
April 21, 2005
This beetle was buzzing low along a woodland trail. Suddenly it dove into the leaf litter. When I attempted to dig it out, it played dead. I took several photos and even picked it up. Suddenly it buzzed to life and flew off.

This species has been reported to seek out Formica ant mounds in spring, but I did not see any ants where it landed. It could have been a male seeking newly-emerged females.

Neat
I hadn't come accross these before. Now, I'll be watching for them!
