Is gender possible from this view?

Determining gender from photos
The short answer on your gender question is Yes. Details from An Introduction to Southern California Butterflies by Fred Heath:

"Above the forewing tips are dark - black in the male and gray in the female. The male has a single black spot in the middle of the forewing, while the female has two such spots."

The one spot/two spot thing is mentioned in at least two other books that cover butterflies in the West.
