Size: 4 mm
2 species in US but only P. coraxa in California & British Columbia.

Important characters from Manual of Nearctic Diptera (1).
- 2-5 mm long.
- Wing venation various characters important (see keys).
- Hind tarsus flattened, but not ornamented (see pics in Calotarsa for an ornamented example).
- Basal tarsomere of metatarsi shorter than 3rd tarsomere.
- The wing's costal cell "C" (closest to body & on front edge) is scalpel shaped & shorter than pterostigmatal section "Pt" (adjacent cell on wing edge).
- Acrostichal bristles absent.
- Dorsocentral bristles "DC" in regular rows (very short and hard to see).
- Antennae with bare terminal arista; scape and pedicel short and subequal.
