Possible ID
Although your butterfly is extremely worn and parts of the wings are missing, you can discern the basic coloration pattern. Given the basic coloration pattern and your location, I think that you may have a Silvery Checkerspot. Enter this name in the Search box to view photos of this butterfly. The one caveat is that I am a novice at bug identification; but I enjoy the challenge. Hopefully, someone with expertise will correct me if I am wrong. Incidentally, I initially used the Kaufman Field Guide to Butterflies of North America in my search.

Silvery
Thanks. I've added another view that seems more diagnostic. There were two in the area and this might be the second individual. I believe you are correct about the ID.

Silvery Checkerspot
The view of the underside confirms the identification.
