Beetle like insect on grass and hard surfaces - Pyrrhocoris apterus

Beetle like insect on grass and hard surfaces - Pyrrhocoris apterus
Mississauga, Ontario, Canada
August 10, 2018
Size: 1 cm
Thousands of these all over the light post, grass and curb. Grass in poor condition and not able to restore despite several attempts. They seem to like the heat of the day. I didn't zoom in to one particular insect because they all seem to have different patterns and sizes.

Moved from ID Request.

Ken nailed it. Various online sources indicate that this species has become established in Ontario. This is our first submission from there, however. The image has been cropped for placement.

Thanks for posting--and welcome to BugGuide!

These are true bugs in the Hemiptera. The different color patterns are different stages of the nymphs.

Hopefully, an expert will come along to identify them. They do look like Pyrrhocoris apterus but they are only introduced in a few locations in NA, I think.
