Hahncappsia mancalis

Hahncappsia mancalis
Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana, USA
August 15, 2018
Size: ~12 mm TL
Found two days previous in my backyard vegetable garden. I was very fortunate to catch this one because it kept flying off and hiding under leaves.

I have photos of a couple of Hahncappsia that I believe are H. mancalis, but they are just a bit worn and faded enough to raise questions about their identity. I have also found several Hahncappsia that are posted on BugGuide under the H. marculenta/neomarculenta group of similar species with fainter markings and translucent wings. The moth here did not have translucent wings and matches up well with many of the BugGuide images of H. mancalis that have been vetted by expert reviews. It also matches up well with all of the images posted on Moth Photographers Group. I have read the Capps description and many of the BugGuide discussions related to H. mancalis. I am pretty sure this is H. mancalis, and if so, would be one of the few images posted there that provide a good view of the underwing. I came close to posting this directly to the species page, but thought better of it due to the amount of discussion regarding identification of this species. Having one of the experts place it would give it more credence.
