Eastern Tiger Swallowtail. Much too late for Canadian.

Thanks for the id. I thought it was eastern. In the Catskills they are still active that late into the summer b/c of the higher elevation, but in lesser numbers. I saw both species on this trip. Though the eastern was more common at that time there were several Canadians. In Maine they are still everywhere.

Interesting, Andrew. Here in e. Ontario I haven't seen a Canadian since late June, although there were a few seen on the local butterfly count on July 6. Easterns used to be very rare here but are now fairly common in July.

Yes, it is. Easterns are by far more common now in the southern half of NY (basically s. of I-90), but the Canadians are still showing in small numbers where they occur in the state (mostly in the Catskills and north). In Maine the Canadians are all that's in the state so id. is easy.
