Moved from Lipoptena.

Lipoptena cervi
ID based on the range and arrangement of the abdominal tergites. Sheep keds are entirely wingless, unlike deer keds which emerge winged and then shed the wings after they land on a host (the base of the wings are still visible near the thorax). Additionally, sheep keds do not have obvious tergites (the brown bar-like structures)on the abdomen. See (1) for a recent key to the North American Lipopteninae.

Hippoboscidae
and it looks more like Lipoptena cervi (deer parasite)than Melophagus ovinus. Feeds on blood. They are all wingless flies.

How do you tell sheep from deer keds?
I am not much of a bugger, what says deer ked over sheep ked?

I am particularly interested as I think Sheep Ked would be much more harmful and hard to get rid of. From what I read, Deer Ked only reproduce on Deer. But Goats are an awfull lot like deer (short haired ruminant browsers).

Wingless?
Hi Margarethe,

Just wondering what group "They are all wingless flies." pertains to. Hippoboscidae contains many winged species. Even Lipoptena cervi isn't totally wingless (see here).

Is this related to
Melophagus ovinus- sheep ked?
