Tabanus americanus for West Virginia - Tabanus americanus - Female
Scott Lake (private), south of Beverly, Randolph County, West Virginia, USA
August 19, 2018
Having survived Salt Marsh Greenhead Flies (Tabanus nigrovittatus) in New Jersey, this fly demanded a great deal of respect. Over an inch long, she surveyed her sourroundings from a barrel by the lakeshore, turning slowly in a counter-clockwise direction. She ended her perusal facing me, and I admit that I jumped when she flew towards me. I did not provide her with a meal.
